In chapter one I found interesting the different type of research and data schools can use to help students. One of the research that I found interesting was correlation. Correlation is a calculation that allows you to see if one variable has a connection with another variable. I can connect this to business classes and my personal experience because in business we use correlation as part of the research of a business plan. I plan to teach this method to advance business classes because it will give students a useful tool when their business is not generating enough revenue. Woolfolk used this method to find if there is a correlation between landscape lawns and school achievement. It also talks about how correlation can lead to more correlations and creates this three-way triangle that connects all three correlations (Woolfolk, p.16).
This chapter also talks about how teachers depend on their own research to improve lesson plans and classroom management. Teachers have to conduct research using different tools. The book gives an example that teachers try to find out the different types of topics students seem to engage the most. Research can also be used among other teachers. For example, using mixed methods can be used to find the effectiveness of a teacher by analyzing student behaviors. In my personal experience as a substitute teacher, I have used observations from several different schools in the same district to see if classroom organization has an impact on student behavior. After observing different schools in the same district, I came to the conclusion that teachers who are more organized in the classroom serve as an example for other students. If I teacher is messy, most of the time students will follow the exact same behavior as the teacher.

Hi Luis,
ReplyDeleteI think it's great you plan to utilize your knowledge of the business side with your future students. Having an understanding of correlation is definitely important and will come into play during our career as educators. For example, I can make correlations with how students spend their time at home with the time they put into their school work. If I take this information, I can use it as a positive measure that allows students to make connections of their own. Further, I can use their interests in classroom discussions and activities that could heighten their participation and engagement. I know that many of my students enjoy playing Fortnite at home so I've used it to have them teach the class about organization.
Using one's own research, experience and evidence does play a large role in improving classroom lesson plans and management. While it can be beneficial to read various posts, blogs, articles, books or having discussions with colleagues, I feel planning and classroom management are most positive when teachers try their own methods. Not all teachers and students are the same so it's important to consider these factors when organizing your own classroom. For instance, I share a classroom with three other teachers and my organization and time I put into planning don't match up with theirs. I believe that the way I conduct my time and effort proves to be effective while they may or may not agree. You're right in that students tend to follow the behaviors of their teachers-- my students have seen and learned that cleanliness serves as organization and safety in my classroom so they've become accustomed to pushing in their chairs, putting away supplies, etc. Every classroom and every teacher is different so it's crucial for teachers to place their own thoughts into their plans and organization to best serve their students.
Hi Luis,
ReplyDeleteI liked how you ended your blog by saying, " If a teacher is messy, most of the time students will follow the exact same behavior as the teacher." I completely agree with this statement. To avoid being disorganized a teacher must plan out strategic activities that relates to every lesson. The skill that a teacher enforces through every strategy makes them become a divergent learner. According to the text a divergent thinking is the ability to come up with many possible solutions. Without these skills students will always think there is only one way to an answer(convergent thinking). (Woolfolk, p. 135)
