Module 2

In chapter 4 it talks about creativity. I see creativity as one of the most important things in the classroom. Teachers should develop lessons that allow students to be creative. I have been to only one school where 4th graders can go for 40 minutes to this room that the school created and students are able to use all the resources to be creative. In that room, there was papers and materials to make bracelets. Students are also able to use a tablet to be creative and develop their own music using technology. This space was designated for students to be creative and use different skills to create something. The book talks about the importance of brainstorming. It said "The basic tenet of brainstorming is to separate the process of creating ideas from the process of evaluating them because evaluation often inhibits creativity (Osborn, 1963) (Pg,137). If students are not allowed to be creative during school then they won't be able to use their skills to become independent thinkers. Brainstorming allows students to share their own ideas and while others listen they can build on those ideas. Some of the rules of brainstorming are that students should not be allowed to judge other ideas until all ideas have been set in the table. Encourage students to share wild ideas because others can build upon them. Schools that allow for creativity students become more content knowledge not superficial memoried ways. Schools should prepare students to go beyond, improvise and invent (Sawyer, 2015) (Pg.137)

  1. Luis,

I absolutely love how the school created a space for students to go and gave them time to express their more creative side. I feel like more schools are starting to branch out beyond the set curriculum and hope that this becomes more common in all schools and grade levels. Although I do think that academics are important I also think that it is important to give them time to express themselves in the design to find their true passion. This could also help excite students who are struggling learners because it offers them a break from tough curriculum.
